How to set up Discord server logsServer logs, set up in two minutes.

Discord only keeps an audit log of admin actions, and only for 45 days. To log messages, voice and members you add a logging bot. Here is the whole setup with Quark, start to finish.

The setup

Six steps. Most take seconds.

You need the Manage Server permission in the server you are setting up. Everything else is below.

  1. 1

    Create a private log channel

In Discord, create a text channel and call it something like #logs. Turn on Private Channel and add only your staff roles, so members can't read it.

    # logs
    Private Channel on
    Staff roles only
  2. 2

    Invite Quark

Open quark.bot/invite, pick your server and click Authorize. You can untick Administrator on the permissions screen. Quark works without it.

  3. 3

    Run /logging

Type /logging in any channel and choose your new log channel from Quark's reply. Logging starts straight away.

  4. 4

    Choose what gets logged

Open the dashboard, or type /dashboard for a direct link. Turn whole categories of events on or off, and send each kind of log to its own channel if you want them apart.

  5. 5

    Set your ignore rules

In the dashboard's Ignore tab, add the channels and members you don't want logged, like a bot-commands channel. You can ignore someone as the target of an event, or as the one who carried it out.

  6. 6

    Test it

Delete a message, then edit another. Both should show up in your log channel. If something is missing, run /troubleshoot and Quark will tell you why.

“The reason we choose Quark was because of its logging, can directly see images that get deleted, and the logging is really fast. You can simply type one command and have everything set up.”

Questions

Asked before adding Quark.

Only partly. Discord's audit log records administrative actions such as bans, role changes and channel edits, and keeps them for 45 days. It does not record deleted or edited messages, or who joined and left voice channels. For those you need a logging bot.

Create a text channel, turn on Private Channel so only your staff roles can see it, then add a logging bot such as Quark and point it at that channel with /logging.

For admin actions, open Server Settings and choose Audit Log. For everything else, open the log channel your bot posts to. With Quark you can also search your logs on the web dashboard.

Logs are a running record of what happens in a server: messages deleted or edited, members joining and leaving, voice activity, and moderation actions. Moderators use them to check what happened after the fact.

Quark does not need the Administrator permission. It needs to see the channels you want logged, post in your log channels, and read the audit log so it can name the moderator behind an action.

Yes. Quark has a generous free plan that covers everyday logging. Quark Pro adds 30 days of searchable log history on the web, CSV export, logs for messages up to 4 weeks old, and voice mute and deafen tracking.
